Private Teacher, Woodwind Instruments

The National Cathedral School (NCS) and St. Albans School (STA) of Washington, DC, are seeking a jointly appointed private teacher of woodwind instruments beginning immediately for one or two afternoons a week with the ability to grow the program for 1 or 2 more afternoons.

Responsibilities include teaching private woodwind lessons to boys and girls in grades 4-12, keeping detailed records of lessons, and maintaining good communication with families and the chair of the music department.

We are seeking a musician/teacher with expert skill on at least one woodwind instrument and “doubling” ability on others (specialists on only one instrument will be considered). Flute, clarinet, and saxophone are most in demand. Most students are beginners, but some have considerable experience.

The lessons are taught on the grounds of the National Cathedral School in Northwest DC. Nearly all the lessons take place after school. Lesson frequency, length, and scheduling are arranged directly between the teacher and the families.

The pay is $86 per hour and highly competitive with other schools and private studios.

Minimum Experience:
  • Expert-level ability on one woodwind instrument
  • Three years of private teaching experience

Education:
  • BA Required

Preferred Qualifications:
Strong experience as a performer and teacher with high standards for student accomplishment using a kind and patient manner. Facility for additional woodwind instruments is highly desirable. Other musical skills (keyboard ability, ensemble directing, etc.) are a plus.

The National Cathedral School is grounded in the Episcopal promise to honor the dignity of every human being.  We believe a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community fosters intellectual excellence and empathy needed to amplify the collective power of young women to enrich and improve a dynamic world.  We therefore seek candidates who will embrace diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging to ensure a strongly connected and engaged community in and outside of the classroom.

Interested candidates should send an electronic application that includes a brief cover letter, résumé and the names and contact information of three to five references.  Please submit these materials as one combined attachment, in Word or pdf format, with “Part-time Woodwind Teacher” in the subject line to: NCSemployment@ncs.org.
